Windchimes jingle jangled in the breeze. The jingle jangle made her jump. She jigged and jumped and flew. One wore pink sparkles and held a glittering wand. Her name was Chantal, and she lead the way.

"This is not our garden," she said. "Where is the trampoline? Where is the camellia bush?"

"We're at the beach," Zaira exclaimed. "It's almost as good as a trampoline." Zaira was the blue fairy. She had big, graceful blue wings. "Look at all the sand! Look at all the waves! Hiya!"she cried in glee.

"Look," said Lucy. She was a golden fairy. "See the sun going down."

The sea was very big. They looked out across the waves and saw the sun. It looked like a big gold and orange ball going down. It made the sky red and gold and mauve around it. The sea was blue, but some of it was gold.

Drops of splashing water looked pink and gold.

"Look at the children playing," Zaira said.

Little children ran into the water. Then they squealed with laughter and ran away from the waves. The waves chased them up the beach.

"But we are so tiny," Chantal said. "How can we play that?"

"We fly," Zaira cried.

The blue fairy flew above the waves. She swooped down close, but before the waves could reach up and grab her, she flapped her wings and went straight up. The water could not reach her. She laughed.

"Let's do it again!"

All three fairies played with the waves. Chantal waved her magic wand, and even the sand began to glitter as the sun went down.

"Look," the grown ups said. "It's like the sea is laughing."

Funny Witch

Lucinda, The Streetlight Fairy

High above a little road a fairy lived in a street light. At night the street light shone down and the fairy played in its yellow glow.

When she was tired she flew up under the light’s little, tin roofand slept with the rain tapping around her.

The fairy’s name was Lucinda. Cars try to run over me.”

“It is important to stay off the road,” Lucy agreed, “if you want to be safe from cars.”

“All I want,” said the animal, “is grass to eat, fresh water to drink, and for people to leave me alone.”

Lucy thought.

“I think I know a place like that,” she said.

“Where there is grass?”

“Yes. Lots of long grass.”

“And water?”

“Yes. There is water all around.”

“But will they leave me alone?”

“Oh yes. Come with me now and I will show you.”

Lucy lead the way. She flew along in the air. The strange animal followed her. He was a very fast runner. They crossed the road carefully, safely, when no cars were coming.

“Here it is,” said Lucy. There certainly was grass there. Thelawn was long and grass grew in the flowerbeds. The waterwas fresh. Rain had fallen and made big puddles all over thefront yard.

“Are you sure there’s no dog?” asked the animal.

“There used to be a dog here,” Lucy said. “There are new peoplehere now and they have no dog and no cat. I do not think theywant pets. I think they will leave you alone.”

“I suppose it’s all right then,” said the animal. “I’ll just hideunder the house while I make sure.”

“But, could you tell me please," Lucy asked, before the rabbit could hide, "what sort of animal are you?”

“A rabbit,” said the animal as he hopped away. “I’m not a bunny, I’m not cute and fluffy and I don’t bring Easter eggs.I’m a rabbit who wants to be left alone.”

Lucy flew away to where the glow of her street light was waiting. She played with the moths and the other fairies, and she left the rabbit alone.

One night the rain tapped long and hard on Lucy’s little roof. The wind blew hard and the light went out. She lit her wand and went back to sleep.

Finally the storm stopped. The rain ceased. The wind fadedinto a murmur. Lucy looked out at the world. There was a bigmess everywhere. A tree had fallen down and covered a carin branches. A cable had fallen across the road. People weremoving slowly down the road in a truck. There were bright, flashing lights on the truck. Every now and then it stopped. People got out to fix some cables. They were making the lights come back on.

Lucy thought. She thought about her friends. She rememberedthe rabbit who wanted to be left alone.

"The puddles around that house must be getting very big," she thought to herself. "I had better go and see if the rabbit is all right."

Lucy made her wand into an umbrella and flew along the street until she came the house where the rabbit lived. The puddles were very big.

"Hello," she called to the rabbit.

"Hello yourself," the rabbit answered from under the house.

"I was just wondering," said Lucy, "if it was too wet for you now under the house. Would you like to come out now that it has stopped raining?"

"Go away. Rabbits like the dark anyway."

Lucy thought.

"I know there is a puddle in your doorway, but there is a place by the tulips where you could come out."

"It's too small."

"I could help you."

"I don't need any help," answered the rabbit.

"I'll just hold out my hands," Lucy told him, "and you can use them to pull yourself out."

The rabbit did not answer.

Lucy put her hands in under the house near the gap where the tulips grew. Soon, the rabbit's furry paws hooked themselves over her hands. The rabbit wiggled and squiggled and scrabbled his feet. Finally, with a great big kick of his big back feet, he got himself out from under the house.

Thump! Lucy and the rabbit fell in the tulips.

The fur tickled. Lucy laughed.

"What's so funny?" the rabbit asked.

"Look," said Lucy. Lights were flashing from the truck down the street. Street lights were coming back on, and house lights were shining once more through the windows. "The rain is sparkling."

Sleeping Fairy - Pinked

Shshshsh. He wondered what it was, so he lay himself down on the ground and put an eye to the crack and peeped through it. His long legs stretched out behind him and kicked over a picket fence that belonged to a witch. This frightened the witch's house so much that it got up and ran away with the witch inside.

"Help! Help!" cried the witch, but the giant did not hear. He was busy looking through the crack.

He put one big, blue eye against the crack and looked through.

At first he did not know what he was looking at. There were too many green things in his way. There were little leaves nodding in a breeze and grasses rustling. What he was looking at through the crack was a garden.

Then he saw a black and white bird. The bird saw his shiny, watery eye.

“Is that a bit of the sky?” asked the bird. The blue did not answer so the bird hopped across and gave it a great, big peck.

“Ow,” cried the giant, and jerked away from the crack. “Ouch! That hurts.” He slapped a hand over his eye. “Ow." He had clapped his hand over his eye so hard it hurt his head. "What a stupid crack,” he wailed, and gave it a furious kick.

He kicked it so hard that his old, flappy boot flew off and went flying right through the air until it landed upside down on the Rainbow Queen's palace.

The giant was so cross when he saw his boot fly away that he kicked the crack again. This time his toe got stuck in it.

"Ow!” he cried. “Ouch! That hurts.”

On the other side of the crack, the black and white bird saw a great, big, pink, fat worm.

“I want that worm,” said the bird. It grabbed the big fat worm in its beak. It grabbed as much of that big fat worm as it could and pulled. The bird pulled with all his might to get that fat worm out of the ground.

“Ow! Ow!” roared the giant. The bird could not hear the giant because it was on the other side of the crack.Everyone in fairyland could hear him, though.

The Rainbow Queen heard the noise. She flew out of her palace with her fairy attendants.

"Who put that ugly old boot on my palace?” she asked. "And why is that giant making all that noise?"

The Rainbow Queen's fairies flew to the giant and scolded him.

“You must stop making that noise,” they told him. “And you must take your boot off the palace roof. The boot is making the windows dark and the air all stinky.”

“Ow!” said the giant. “Ouch! Something stabbed my eye," he told them, "and now someone is pinching my toe. Oh! Oh!”

He hopped on up and down on one foot and tried to pull his toe out. His head wobbled and his belly jiggled like a sea of jelly, but his toe stayed stuck. He pulled and pulled, but the toe would not come out.

“What shall we tell the Queen? She wants him to take his boot off her palace.”

“Grab him by the ears," a voice called. "And pull hard. Really hard. That's the way to get his toe out of the crack." It was the witch. She had brought her house back to see what the fairies were doing.

So the fairy attendants grabbed the giant by the ears and began to pull.

“Ow,” said the giant. He waved an arm to shoo the fairies away. “Go away you stupid fairies. Now I've got a sore eye, a sore toe, and sore ears. Oh.”

“How rude,” exclaimed the fairies. “We were only trying to help.”

“You can help,” the witch told them. “Give him some pepper. When he sneezes his toe will come out of the crack.”

So the fairy attendants gave the giant some pepper. He sneezed. He sneezed so hugely he blew the rest of the witch's fence over. The frightened pickets got up and ran off with their railings, leaving the witch and her house behind.

The giant sneezed again. He sneezed so enormously that he blew his boot right off the tower and over a hill and so far away that it landed on the moon.

Then he sneezed a third time. He sneezed so humongously that he fell over on his back.

“Oh,” he cried. His toe was still in the crack.

“What,” asked the Rainbow Queen, “is the meaning of all this sneezing?” She flew over and stood on the giant's belly. It was like standing on a sea of jelly, but she kept her feet and looked sternly at him.

“Every one is so mean to me,” cried the giant. “The fairies have been pulling my ears and making me sneeze, and now the moon has taken my boot.”

The Rainbow Queen looked around and saw where the giant's toe was stuck in the crack.

“You don't take very good care of your socks,” she said. “You've got a great big hole in one of them and now I see that a bird on the other side of the crack has mistaken your toe for a worm.”

The Rainbow Queen could see through the crack even with the giant's toe in her way. Any fairy queen could have.

“Why is that bird so mean to me?” the giant cried. His tears made big streams that poured down the sides of his face.

“We'll just have to cut his toe off,” called the witch from her house. “He'll have to hop around for the rest of his life. And serve him right.”

“Before we cut his toe off,” the Rainbow Queen answered, “perhaps we could rub some grease on it. Then it would slide out.”

“Where will you fairies find grease in your nice clean castle?” asked the witch.

“In the kitchen,” said the yellow fairy. “We have cooking oil so that our cakes will slide off the trays.” And she flew off to the kitchen.

“In the lamps,” said the red fairy. “We use lamp oil to light the passages.” And she flew off to the passages.

“And the candle wax,” said the pink fairy. “We use that sometimes when we want to make the floor smoother for dancing on.” Then she flew off to the dancing hall.

“Well,” said the witch. “What about some of my bacon grease then?”

“Oh no you don't,” said the Rainbow Queen. “If the bird thinks it smells delicious bacon on its worm, it will try even harder to pull it through.”

“Nuts,” said the witch, seeing that she wasn't going to trick the Rainbow Queen into being mean to the giant.

The three fairies came back. They tried the baking oil, and pulled. They tried the lamp oil and pulled. Finally they rubbed the wax on the crack itself and pulled again.

Pop!

The giant fell back again as his toe came out.

“Hooray,” said the fairy attendants. “Now we can visit the garden again.”

“And I,” said the Rainbow Queen, “will see if the moon is all right. Perhaps the man in the moon will be kind enough to give the giant his flappy old boot back.”

“Nuts,” said the witch.

“And you,” said the Rainbow Queen to the witch, “now that your house is unharmed you must mend your fences. After that, would you please be so kind as to mend the giant's sock?”

“Oh.” The did not like to be kind, so she pulled her head in through the window so they couldn't see her anymore. “Nuts,” they heard her say. All the same, when she had mended her fence she found some cobwebs to mend the giant's sock with.

So the giant got his sock mended, and the moon gave the boot back, and the fairies were able to fly through the crack and visit their favourite garden again.

Windy in the Yard

Crafty, windy fingers have been playing in the garden today. The plastic children’stable is blown over, scattering the tea set across the bark chipped yard. Thedolls have fallen off their chairs and onto the blueberry bush. Onthe spinning clothes line, whirling dizzily around, is the teddy bear. He hasbeen cleaned and hung up to dry and now the wind is playing with him.

When the wind came the children had fun. They put out their arms as if theywere flying and let the wind blow them across the yard.

"We're flying! We're flying!" they laughed.

There were towels on the clothes line. Thewind blew them and the clothes-hoist spun around like a big umbrella.

Laughing, the children grabbed the towels andheld on tight. Faster and faster they ran. The windy towels pulled them alongas fast as they could go.

"We're flying! We're flying!" theylaughed.

They laughed and ran and nearly flew, butthen the wind became too rough.

Now the children have gone inside, their faces are flushed and their hair iswild.

With the children gone, the fairies sneak outtheir flowery bush. They fly to the clothes-hoist and hold onto Teddy. It istheir turn to play with him now. Around they go in a great big circle, justlike the children did. It makes them laugh. They spin and spin, until the windis too strong for their wings even with Teddy to help them.

A peg lets go of one of Teddy's ears. Thefairies fly back to the camellia bush where the birds are hiding.

They look out at the windy yard. There is abowl of soapy suds that tipped over on the grass, the feathers of a littlebird, broken shards of a flower pot, and a pair of trousers blown under thehouse.

The fairies and the birds watch, safe insidetheir little bush where the shining leaves barely flutter.

BUBBLES

Three happy fairies flew through the crack in the garden to play on the trampoline.

Zaira bounced high up into the air.

“What a pretty blue the sky is,” she said.

“And what pretty, white clouds on the ground," said Amber.

"Clouds don't go on the ground," said Chantal.

"Those clouds do," Amber answered. Her name was Daisy.

“Now,” asked Chantel, “how could she possibly know what her name is unless we tell her?”

“She might,” Daisy aurgued. “Why don't we ask her?”

“Very well then.” Chantel sighed, and turned to the New Year fairy. “Do you know what your name is?”

“Yes,” said the New Year Fairy. “I heard people singing at the party, and I know what my name is.”

“Then what is your name?” asked Chantel. “Is it Rose?”

“Is it Happy?” asked Amber.

“Is it Sharona?” asked Zaira.

“Is it Martha and the Aeronauts?” asked Daisy.

“No, no, no, no,” answered the New Year Fairy.

“Then what is it?”

“It's Britney!”

“Britney?” Everyone was surprised.

Then Chantel waved her wand over the brand new fairy, sprinkling little fairy magic, and all the fairies said together, “Welcome to the world, Britney!” Lots of children were running and playing. Some of them were jumping on the trampoline.

“Let's hide,” said the fairy in pink. “We can hide in that bush there. It has such big and pretty flowers.”

So the four little fairies crept away from the crack towards the camellia bush. The children had taken their sandals off to jump on the trampoline. The fairy in pink waved her wand over the sandals, sprinkling a little magic. When the children put their sandals back on, they were surprised to find how fast they could run.

Once they reached the bush, the fairies flew up into the flowers. Now that they were safe, they had fun watching the children play.

“I'm glad we found this place,” said the fairy in blue. “I wish I could have a turn at jumping on the trampoline.”

“We'll have to wait until the Big People are gone,” said the fairy with the dusty moth wings. “We don't want them to catch us. They might stop us from going back to Fairyland.”

“What are they doing now?” asked the fairy in pink.

All of a sudden the Big People were calling out, “Happy New Year! Happy New Year!” They hugged and kissed each other.

“What happy people,” said the fairy in gold.

“But what's all that banging noise?” asked the fairy with the dusty moth wings.

“Look up there,” said the fairy in blue.

The Big People were looking up at the sky. The fairies looked up, too. What they saw was so wonderful that they hovered right outside their flowers to see.

“How beautiful,” the fairies said. They were watching fireworks. Beautiful sparks filled the sky in more colours than the rainbow. Green and blue, gold and purple, red and silver and pink. They blossomed like flowers and sparkled like stars.

“Where is that little spark going?” asked the fairy with the dusty moth wings.

One little, silver spark was flying in a big arc towards the earth.

All the fairies flew to where the silver spark had fallen. It was difficult. They had to dodge among the Big People without being seen. Then they found her. She was a beautiful little fairy with silver wings.

“A brand new fairy,” said the fairy in pink.

“A brand new friend,” said the fairy in gold.

“A New Year fairy,” explained the fairy in blue.

“What pretty fireworks this year,” said the Big People.
